Anglia TV v Reed [1972]

A engaged R to play lead role in production.
A incurred expenses.
R broke contract.
Problem of proof barred A claiming anything under
expectation interest.
So A wanted to recover expenditure, not loss of
Court of Appeal held:
1.  Plaintiff
may claim reliance loss instead of expectation loss in certain circumstances.
2.  If plaintiff
chooses to claim reliance interest, he can recover not just expenditure
incurred after contract but also expenditure incurred before contract, provided
it was reasonably in contemplation of parties as likely to be wasted if
contract broken.
