Home Office v Dorset Yacht Co [1970]

Due to negligence of officers, 7 borstal trainees escaped
while on training exercise and damaged property.
Any duty of care owed by Home Office to persons whose
property would be likely to be damaged by tortuous acts of borstal trainee if
he escaped?
House of Lords held that any duty on borstal officer
to use reasonable care to prevent borstal trainee from escaping was owed only
to persons whom he could reasonably foresee had property situate in the
vicinity which detainee was likely to steal and damage in course of evading
capture.
