Greatorex v Greatorex [2000]

Young man crashes car.
Father part of fire service rescue team.
Suffers psychological injury and brings action for
negligence against son.
Held that claimant should not be able to recover for
psychological injury caused by self-inflicted damage of a relative.
Policy reasons – objectionable form of intra-family
litigation.
[But note different rule applies to physical injury –
Can sue family member if they crash car while you are
passenger, causing you injury.
Could argue however that nervous shock easier to fake,
increasing chance of defrauding insurance companies]
